In Progress

Yesterday I was working on a new piece. Here is what is up on my wall right now. Some parts were already pieced together but most of it is just stuck there. I am wondering if I should bother sewing this together or just take it off and do something else. What do you think?

Lisa, did you have a plan for this when you started? I don't mean a layout plan, but an overall goal. Is it an abstract piece that will stand on its own? A background for something else? Are you playing with color? Or??? The reason I ask is that abstraction does not come naturally to ME at all, but I sometimes make little forays into that world. My problem often is that my forays are all too often plan-less. When that is the case, I generally fail to produce anything I like. If I can manage to figure out an underlying goal (or problem I'm solving, or purpose), then I might have a chance to turn out a cohesive piece. As I mentioned, I'm new to the world of abstraction, but what has made the most sense to me in my own efforts is recognizing that any piece of art should make some kind of statement. If I have some idea what my own efforts are trying to SAY, I do better. So, back to my first question. What was your original plan?

Hi Lisa, I think it's off to a good start and I would keep on with it. Right now it looks very much the same value...maybe you could try throwing in some small punches of something opposite the palette that's there now - like some cobalt blue - give it a little zing here and there to move your eye around the piece.

Keep us posted on what you do with it!

Lisa, I rather like it, and I cannot tell you why, because the colors and style are not usually ones that appeal to me. I think it can stand alone or act as a background for something else, it has interest but not dominance. I do think the decision to go forward has to be between you and your inner voice, this piece speaks to me, mostly as a powerful background but if it does not speak to you, then maybe it is telling you to come back to it later...

Listen to the fabrics. Make some changes until it pleases you. It is a very good piece - very pleasant to look at. Enjoy it ad play.

Lisa, I like your colors. Would you consider finishing the piecing as is, or nearly as is, and then cutting it into at least four blocks and sewing the newly created blocks back together in a different arrangement? That way you could get some of the stripes and rectangles going in different directions and create more movement. If that suggestion isn't too much of a shock for you, then how about doing the above and then fusing some long, narrow, wavy lines of fabric in a contrasting solid color? I think you just need to keep playing until your composition pleases you. Don't be afraid to cut and paste :)

Hi! I like it too! And like the above writer I think you need more movement. I was going to ask if you had more of the stripe fabric and what would happen if you inserted some of it with the stripes going the other way.
The above idea about cutting it into fourths would give you an interesting pinwheel effect. Please let us know what you do. Annie Dehgan

Lisa, I don't mean to sound cruel or offensive, but to me the composition is BORING! I like the colors and the stripes, but they (the stripes) are all going the same way. There doesn't seem to be any movement. How about doing what Lexi above suggested: sewing together and cutting it up and turning the blocks around? I think that might improve it considerably.
