Since we had only a couple of hours, it was a quick introduction, which was enough to make me want to explore it more.

Here are some of the examples that Ana Lisa had out on a table for us to look at.
I really liked these pieces where she started with a black fabric and discharged them.
Since we had limited time and needed to do some dyeing, Ana Lisa wanted us to sew right away. After a quick introduction, we sewed pieces of cotton and silk noil (raw silk).

I managed to sew 10 different designs. I tried a colored fabric to see what would happen.

There were three buckets of dye color into which she just randomly threw everybody's pieces. I thought it was weird dyeing fabric in one of the meeting rooms of the hotel. But we had plastic spread out on the floor underneath. And we had to go back to people's rooms to fill up the large buckets in the tub.

Once the pieces were in the dye, Ana Lisa showed us a slideshow of her work because the pieces needed to sit in the dye for awhile. After the presentation, we pulled out the pieces and attempted to sort them.

We had all put our initials on the pieces with Sharpie beforehand. However, it was hard to read after they were dyed. Even though I had put 10 pieces in, I only got eight back. So I don't have any idea how those others came out. Someone else must have gotten them.

Once they were sorted, we had to rip out all of the stitching to see the design. The job was made easier because we had used a cotton thread and a rayon thread together.

This is how some of mine turned out.

This was some of the cotton fabric.

This one was the light green fabric, which makes the lines pop a little in contrast to the raspberry color.

These are a couple of the raw silk pieces. I think they are more dynamic because the fabric is a little thicker and the dye didn't penetrate as much in places where the fabric was stitched and folded.

Here is another student's piece, which has more contrast.

I need to do more exploring with this. My cotton pieces didn't turn out very well. That could be because we rushed through the dyeing process, or that my stitched lines weren't very close together. The closer together, the less the dye can penetrate. There are lots of variables to explore (like the fabric type, time in dye, stitching) with this technique and I hope I can get to it sometime this summer.
Three of us met at Kathryn Albertson park. Usually when I do sketching, I use a mechanical pencil. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does smear (I use a 2B lead).

I know lots of people use pens for sketching. I like to be able to erase and am not that confident with using a pen. But I decided to give it a go this time, because I will never get confident if I don't do it.

Here is the first sketch I did, which was started with pencil, and then I went back over with pen later (which some other people do, as well).
I had brought my little watercolor set and my Neocolor II water soluble crayons. I used the crayons to add some color to this one. And here is what I was looking at.
As you can see, I took some artistic license with what I was drawing. Since I decided to draw vertically, instead of horizontally, it got squished in a little.
The next sketch I decided to do with pen. I just jumped in without doing any pencil drawing at all. I used a Sharpie extra fine point pen.

I added a little bit of color with the crayons to distinguish some of the areas. What I liked about the pen is that it doesn't smear and will be more permanent. What I didn't like was the quality of the line which was mostly all even. With a pencil, I can change the pressure to get different types of line.

In addition, I have to figure out different ways to shade with the pen. It needs to be either more lines, hatching or cross-hatching. I can't just put more pressure on it. There is also much more contrast with the black lines against the paper.

I need to experiment more with the pen and different types of pens to make a determination of what I like better (or maybe it's a combination of pencil and pen). One of the other gals there that day had some fountain pens which would change the line with some pressure.

If you do any kind of sketching, what tools do you like to use? Do you have a preference? And if you use pens, I would love to hear what brand/kind you like.Lisa Flowers Rosshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03255748017497273887noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195767203341007367.post-20284434388857650382015-06-18T08:01:00.001-06:002015-06-18T08:01:56.815-06:00Field Journal WorkshopEarlier this week, I taught a Field Journal workshop for kids at the Boise Watershed. This is an education facility out by the water treatment plant.

In the summer, the have free classes for kids that combine science with art. Last year, I taught a Fibonacci & Fabric workshop. This year I had the kids make field journals.

I found this tutorial online for how to make a simple book without adhesive. In the tutorial, they used wall paper samples for their cover. I did not want to use wall paper samples because I wanted the kids to be able to write on the cover. So I came up with the idea to use manilla file folders. I cut off all the tabs on the folders. This worked well for the cover as the folder was stiff enough and already had one nice fold in the center.

We could also stitch together the book without having to use a needle, which was another bonus, as the ages range. Even though I requested the ages be 8 -12 for one session and 12 and up for the other, the first session had names listed with ages 6, 7 and even 5. (I'm not sure why they bother putting an age limit if they don't follow it. But I know some people ask if brothers or sisters can come, too, and they probably just say yes.)

The classes are two and a half hours. My plan was to talk about what a field journal is and why scientists use them, have the kids make their journal, talk about what kinds of information/drawings go into a field journal and different ways to observe their surroundings and then take the kids outside to use their field journal. We would come back inside and have the small snack that is provided, discuss some ways to draw nature and then do some more drawing inside from nature objects and taxidermy animals.

The morning session was the younger group and there were 22 kids (even though there is supposedly a 20 person limit. I'm glad I bought extra watercolor pencil sets.). It took a lot longer than I thought for them to get the actual book made. So I didn't get around to giving them hints about drawing, but I don't think that mattered too much.

The afternoon class was the older group and much smaller with only about 10 kids. They had no trouble getting the journal together and they had lots more time to draw and I could discuss the information more in depth and give them the drawing hints.

It all went well and I was exhausted by the end of the day.
Bike wheels, car wheels, train wheels, wheels on our luggage, wheel barrows, mechanical wheels inside of things. Wheels just make things so much easier to move around!

I have wheels on my sewing machine cabinet and on my cutting table. It makes it so much easier for me to wheel them out of the studio when that needs to become the guest bedroom, which it has been for about the last month now and will be for another couple of weeks.

The sewing machine cabinet and cutting table are currently in our downstairs living room. I'm fortunate to have a large enough area there to be able to do this. It's not ideal but I can still work (although I haven't done much of that lately).

In my studio, I can set a piece of foam core on my sewing cabinet and another little cabinet to create a "bridge" to support larger pieces when I am working on them. In the living room area, I didn't really have that. Until now! I figured out that our new windows we installed this winter have a small ledge the perfect height for my foam core.

Voila! A new "bridge" to support my work. Now, if I could just get to work!

I did share the news and the following story with my newsletter subscribers. If you are a subscriber and have already read this, thank you for being a subscriber! After I found out this piece was accepted, they sent an email asking for a high resolution image for publicity materials. I sent off an image. Quite some time later, I received an email that said I had sent the wrong image. Oops! The email also stated that even though I had sent the wrong image, it had been chosen to be used on the postcard they printed. So I shouldn't be surprised when I saw it.

Karl LeClair came to my studio to interview me. Here is the posted interview. (You'll also get a peek of the latest artwork I'm working on.)

They started the series, in part, to help local artists gain exposure, but also in response to a survey that the Boise State University students did about the art culture in Boise, specifically, exploring how/if artists can make a living here. The survey included visual, as well as performing arts. I participated in the survey.

This is a pie chart of the results when asked whether artists could make a living here in Boise. Almost half said no.

Only 27 percent of artists said Boise has all the resources they need. You can read more about the results here.

In my interview with the city, they asked me questions related to this and you can read them there. Basically, I agree that visual artists struggle to make a living here. There are not many opportunities for emerging artists to show their artwork. I think things have improved over the years, especially with programs and encouragement from the City Arts & History Department. But much more improvement could be made.

I hope the survey prompts the city and other organizations to create more support for local artists.

Melissa Frazier was kind enough to let us roam and sketch in her beautiful yard and gardens, where she also had goats, chickens and a dog wandering around. The weather was perfect in the morning and, despite being located in the city, it felt like being in the country.
The ceremony went smoothly. Frank and I were discussing what we remember about our own high school graduation. I don't remember much about it. How about you? Do you remember your high school graduation?Lisa Flowers Rosshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03255748017497273887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195767203341007367.post-51178820738084306122015-05-26T06:00:00.000-06:002015-05-26T06:00:06.456-06:00The GraduateToday is the day and it is time to get out the embarrassing pictures! Anna, our little sweetie (who is now a lovely young lady), is graduating from high school today! We are so very proud of her and relieved the high school days are over.

She will be attending Northern Arizona University in the fall and plans to study Astro-biology. I know we will miss her but I am also excited for her in this next adventure in her life. I know I have not prepared her well in the art of picking up after herself and other domestic duties that she will have to deal with at college (as I am not a good role model for that). But I hope I have prepared her with the knowledge that she can always speak her mind, ask for help when she needs it and will always be loved.
The inspiration for the series came from a field outside of Ketchum (you can read more about in this post). Still "riffing" off that same field, I created Field Study (K2) and Field Study (K3).
Field Study (K2) definitely is further afield from the field (ha!). In Field Study (K3), the abstraction is not as extreme and looks the most like a field of any in the series. Although the goal is not to make it look like a field. The goal is to make pieces inspired by fields.

The year has gone by quickly already and I only have a handful of artworks to show for it. I hope that changes during the rest of the year.

I wanted to share the latest piece I just finished and shipped off for the Studio Art Quilt Associates online Benefit Auction that will start September 18th. They have already started putting the images online so you can take a look at those people that plan ahead and get things done. But be sure to check back again throughout the summer as I'm sure there will be some artists, like me, that will be sending their artwork in close to the June 1st deadline.

Available through the SAQA Benefit Auction

This is the ninth piece in the Foliaris series which focuses on the shapes and lines of leaves with an emphasis on the edges or the veins within the leaf.

I had drawn a little thumbnail sketch of this in my sketchbook and had planned to make a large version. But trying to come up with something for the donation piece and a deadline looming, I decided to use it to make this small piece. The artwork is fused and the machine stitching was kept very simple by just outlining the pieces. To me, this makes it look/feel more like a drawing. It would be nice to explore this a bit more sometime.

I might still make this as a larger piece, as well, and if I did I would add a lot more stitching to create texture in the leaves.

Since I didn't have my husband and daughter to keep up with, it was a pleasure to take as much time as I wanted wandering around the gardens, taking photos and making some sketches. This is one of them.
The glass piece was one in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft. I took this picture because it also had the drawing of the piece. A panel member in one of the discussions at the SAQA conference had said that she finally realized that she didn't have to do a completed sketch in gouache, as one of her professors had done, before actually starting a piece. This reminded me of her story.
The above photo is just a detail of a photograph by Ben Buswell at the UpFor gallery. It catches the light and glitters because he made a bunch of scratches in the paper, like the detail below. It was under glass so hard to photograph without reflections. You really have to see them in person.

At the SAQA conference I met lots of people, many of whom are mothers. Many who have to juggle the duties of motherhood with time in the studio to create, both of which are the most fulfilling of pursuits.

Here are some of the wonderful people I met at the conference. I was very excited to finally meet my virtual friend, Terry Grant (on the right), in 3-D, as well as Gerrie Congdon. Both live in the Portland area.
Namita Gupta Wiggers, director and co-founder of Critical Craft Forum and former curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, gave a wonderfully thought-provoking speech in regards to our fabric medium. Maria Shell, art quilter, encouraged us to seek out funding opportunities.

There were breakout sessions on various topics as well as discussion panels. The photo below is of the student fiber artists panel.

It was interesting to see the students artworks. Most were very conceptual in their work. In addition, there was an international artist panel, as well as a local, Oregonian artist panel. Here Sidnee Snell shows her work.
And there was a silent auction of donated works. I did not get my act together to make one in time. Lots of great pieces were up for bidding and we were told that over $14,000 was raised.

Here are just a few of the pieces that I liked. The photos aren't great because they were all wrapped in plastic and the lighting was kind of dim.
It is more of an "after the fact" kind of thing for me. Last week and this past weekend, I was in Portland, Oregon for the Studio Art Quilt Associates National Conference, Fiberlandia.

Some people were taking pictures with their phone and posting right away on Facebook and other platforms. It was fun to see that, but for me, I like to take pictures with my camera. Then, that requires loading them onto the computer after the fact. Really, I am just not as attached to technology as most people are these days.

It was great to meet so many like minded people from all over the world. As a regional representative, the conference started a day earlier for me with an all day meeting with all the SAQA representatives from all over the world. It was good to hear other regions' success stories and that some of the other regions have some of the same challenges as I do.
As most people were arriving on the day we had the rep meeting, there was an "Ice breaker" event in the evening led by Lyric Kinard. A small project was involved, but the event was more about moving around and meeting people.
Here I am with my portrait buddy Lisa Walton, Vice President of the Board, who is from Australia. The project involved moving around to different tables while working on it. For the final project, we made a fabric portrait of our partner and gave it to them.
There were quite a few of us named Lisa at the conference. At one point, there were about four of us traveling together on the MAX light rail!
We had decided to try experimenting with SolarFast Printing on fabric, as well as some fabric blueprinting.

I had purchased a bottle of brown and black SolarFast paint, as well as the special film for negative printing to try. I used their negative generator to print out a couple of photos to try. I had one which was a close-up of tree bark and one of water reflections.

First, we started off by painting the paint on the fabric and then placing some opaque objects on top, covered that with a piece of glass and set it out in the sun to do it's thing.

Here's a piece where I put washers on the fabric. This is the black paint, but it turned out really blue. (I wonder if they mislabeled the bottle?)

I really like how these two pieces turned out. The one on the left is the brown paint with some faux gears and washers placed on it. The other one is a mixture of the brown and black paint with some rubber rings placed on it.

This one below is a piece where Linda used the special film that you print on with the negative of a photo and place it on the fabric. It should give a positive image on the fabric. She did this one on green fabric with a mixture of avocado and brown paint (?).

Neither of my two photos turned out at all. It was either not opaque enough, or I need to have more contrast in the photo to start with. I will have to play with it some more to see what I can get to work.

Trische had great success using a Zig marker on Lutradur as you can see here. She wrote the words on the Lutradur with a black Zig and then you get the negative on the fabric. She also drew some designs on the Lutradur.

We also played with using already prepared blueprint fabric. It's the same idea. Put opaque items on top of the fabric and put them in the sun to print.

Here are a couple of my blueprint fabrics. One with washers, one with rubber bands and one with string.

I really like the fabrics with the washers and I need to work with that SolarFast film some more because I think it has some potential to make some nice textures.
This time it was through the Livestrong program at the Y. Once again, I had a full class with eight people signed up. But one person wasn't able to make it, so there were only seven.

The coordinator thought it would be better if we had the class for only two hours. I said o.k. and tried to adjust what I did from the first workshop to hopefully speed things up. I didn't show the participants the slides I had of other artists that use hand stitching in their artworks. I did show them a few of the postcards that I had made with hand stitching so they would have some ideas.

During the first workshop, I demonstrated a stitch and then had the students practice it and also use it in several different ways. Then I demonstrated another stitch and had everyone do that. This time I demonstrated all the stitches at one time, had everyone start practicing their stitches and then I went to each table to demonstrate any stitch they wanted to see again and help anyone that needed it. I didn't ask them to come up with different ways to use the stitching.

Then, I had them start composing their pieces (everyone decided to make a postcard size piece). And the rest was the same as before. They fused their compositions together, added accent stitching and then fused it to the stiff interfacing.

I told them that even though the class was scheduled for two hours, they were welcome to stay longer to keep working. A few people did have to leave after the two hours and they took their pieces home to finish. The rest stayed for another hour and one person was able to get completely finished and the others were close.

I like people to have a completed project when they leave because I know it might not get finished if they take it home. I know this because I have done that myself.

Despite not finishing the project, I think most of them had a good time. One person said she had never been able to do a french knot and now she did.

Here are Stephanie, Bea and Carol working on their compositions.

In the previous picture and the next, you will see some cut mats. This was something I learned from my last workshop, that it would be helpful for people to see the finished size so they would know where to end their stitching. So I cut a few mats they could lay on top to help visualize.

Work in progress.

This one, by Ginny, is really fun with the cat scuba diving. This is still a work in progress and she took it home to do some more stitching.
I had a bunch of cats already cut out from a long time ago and a couple of people used them. This is Carol's piece and the only one that got completed. She was the one that said she couldn't do the french knot previously and look at all the ones she put in the sky!
Overall, it went well. I am thinking that, ideally, if I were to teach this again, that two classes of two hours would work best. We could take our time in the first class looking at examples and practicing the stitching. Then, the next class could be spent composing and accent stitching the actual piece.Lisa Flowers Rosshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03255748017497273887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9195767203341007367.post-25962757435557642552015-04-22T07:00:00.000-06:002015-04-22T07:00:01.786-06:00Thought of the Day

How does that happen?

This past weekend my artist friend, Rachel Teannalach, hosted an art sale at her studio. It was called Art on a Budget and she invited local artists to come set up a table to sell artwork. Her studio is in her back yard and that is where everyone set up.

The sale was for three days, for only a couple hours each day, and had a price range for each day. The first day was artwork for sale that was under $100. The second day price range was under $200 and the third day was under $500.

I participated on Thursday only and brought some of my smaller artworks that I already have packaged up and in buckets in my studio. This made it so that I really didn't need to get much ready to participate.

Here is my set up at home. I was seeing if the table was going to hold everything.

And here is Rachel's table. She also had a "Deal of the Day" which was one or two pieces with a special price.

I sold one piece of art and some notecards. But then turned around and bought a couple of Rachel's tiny Expanse paintings (those small ones you see leaned against the fence). I had a feeling I would be spending money.

I didn't participate on Friday and Saturday, as I didn't want to bring larger pieces that would be exposed to sun and other elements. I also didn't have a good portable hanging display.

I enjoyed talking with the other artists and thought it was a good idea for a casual, informal sale of artwork. What creative ideas do you or artists you know come up with for art sales or exposure?
This time we met at the Boise State University Hemingway Center. Gallery director and professor, Kirsten Furlong, talked to our group about the different galleries scattered on campus, how galleries work and how to install an exhibition. Most of the information I already knew, but I wanted to see the exhibition by the BFA seniors.

Kirsten didn't specifically speak about artworks in the exhibition, but did use it as an example and talked about a few of the pieces in passing.

Kirsten did tell us a little about this piece. The student is also married with children and has a job, as well. The video contains scenes of her everyday life of all the different roles she is juggling.

This is a small screen print from an installation piece (which I didn't get a photo of the entire thing). Around a square post that was a structural support in the gallery, there were four shelves placed, one on each side of the post. On each shelf were groups of these screen prints of fire and a sparking match. Screen printed on the floor around the post were more images of the matches. Kirsten said the artist invited viewers to take one of the small screen prints (This one is about 3-1/2" x 2-3/4"). You had to walk on top of the prints on the floor to get one.

I heard from another TVAA member that the artist was hoping the prints on the floor would get more worn as people walked on them, but they seemed to be holding up pretty well. Maybe most people did the same thing I did and tried to "tippy-toe" my way so as to not step on the prints on the floor.

So, this is my most current art acquisition.

There was one thing that Kirsten said that stood out in my mind and I was happy to hear her say it. She said that the universities are a little bit behind the time in having art majors have a focus, i.e. a concentration on ceramics or painting.

She said that contemporary artists used varying media. You may have a printmaker who also does installation work. Or a painter who is also a photographer.

This was good for me to hear because over the years, I have heard the advice from the professional "art world" that you should stick with one medium (and I understand that it comes from learning to become proficient in that medium and creating a cohesive body of work). But seeming as how I like to learn lots of different things, I never really agreed with that, especially now that I have been exploring printmaking for several years and might even start doing some painting as well.

An artist that is a good example for working across different media is Alexander Calder. He is probably best known for his mobiles and metal sculptures, but he also made jewelry, worked in wood, made screen prints, did drawings, paintings, did set design for theatre, worked in bronze, etc. And I doubt anyone ever told him he should just concentrate on one medium.
